The Phoebe Scene In Friends That Went Too Far

At first glance, everyone in "Friends" seems like kind-hearted buddies who care for and enjoy spending time with each other. Sometimes, the show can dip heavily into sarcasm, especially with Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), who uses it in almost every episode. Other characters, like Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), like to use their dark sense of humor or twisted past to win fans over. Unfortunately, it's easy to misconstrue these moments from Phoebe and view her actions as a bit extreme.

A perfect example of this is when she uses her mother's suicide as an excuse to gain more sympathy from her friends and win arguments, like with the blueberry muffin in the middle of the seventh season. Other times, Phoebe comes off just plain mean, like when she admitted to mugging Ross (David Schwimmer) when he was a young boy. Although she apologized for this, it doesn't take away from the fact that Phoebe may have some skeletons in her closet. However, fans believe there's one particular Phoebe scene in "Friends" that went too far.

The one where Phoebe belittles Chandler

Many people quickly became fans of Phoebe's quirky character because she always seems like she doesn't think about the wacky things she says. Unfortunately, some things she has said have been interpreted in a disapproving way, leaving fans confused about whether or not they should support this character. There's a handful of scenes where Phoebe blatantly belittles Chandler. Most of the time, fans take this as her way of being playful, but there are times where it seems like she is going out of her way to be mean-spirited.

The biggest example is in Season 5, Episode 14, "The One Where Everybody Finds Out," when Phoebe finds out about Chandler and Monica (Courtney Cox). In a quick moment, Phoebe mentions that Monica could do better than him. Although she may have just said that to continue to put Chandler down, he wasn't even in the room. This makes it seem like she genuinely disapproves of Chandler.

There are several other times where she makes disparaging comments either at him or behind his back. Phoebe didn't even initially include Chandler in her wedding in the final season. After noticing these slight jabs, we start to wonder if Phoebe ever really cared about or liked Chandler, or if she simply put up with him for the entire show. Maybe she's still upset over giving him $7,000 to quit smoking cigarettes.
