The First Official Powerpuff Girls Reboot Photo Has Everyone Talking

Sugar, spice, and everything nice. These are the ingredients that have everyone talking about the first official photo of the CW's live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot, which the network unveiled on Monday, April 12.

The new version of the beloved Cartoon Network animated series stars Chloe Bennet as Blossom, the "commander and the leader" of the group; Dove Cameron as Bubbles, who is "the joy and the laughter"; and Yana Perrault as Buttercup, "the toughest fighter." The new project "follows the Powerpuff Girls — who used to be America's pint-sized superheroes — as disillusioned 20-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crimefighting," according to the show's logline (via Entertainment Weekly). The big question to answer is whether they will "agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever." The pilot is written and executive-produced by Juno and Jennifer's Body screenwriter Diablo Cody.

Simply entitled Powerpuff, the project is currently in pilot stage, which means it might not get picked up to series, but the fact that the CW is already releasing teaser images seems to bode well for its chances. There's an element of damage control to this photo drop, though: Images from the set leaked to TMZ last week, and the costumes the three leads were wearing got mocked for looking cheap and silly. EW and Entertainment Tonight have both mentioned that the cartoon-accurate costumes in that unofficial photo are seen in a flashback to the characters' teenage years, and the official photo shows their real costumes as adults on the show.

Thus, it should come as no surprise that this newly released image has sparked a lot of conversation.

What people have to say about the live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot

Fan reaction on Twitter to the official photo has been mixed, with some stating that they can't wait to see how the project pans out and others cracking jokes.

"I'm very excited to see how this turns out!" one user wrote on Twitter. Another added that they were "sorry not sorry" about being hyped to see the Powerpuff Girls in live-action.

Elsewhere, @RageRomano joked, "The live-action Powerpuff girls look like they'd make fun of me for the shoes I wear in high school." Twitter user @QKillem picked up on the fact that the disillusioned new Powerpuff Girls are following the life trajectory of the kids who grew up watching them in the late '90s and early '00s. "These Powerpuff 'Girls' got student loan debt," they tweeted. This show will be an experiment in what it's like to see your childhood nostalgia grow up with you.

One fan predicted that Powerpuff will have a similar trajectory to another edgy CW reboot. "I can already tell everyones gonna hatewatch the cw powerpuff girls show so then it will become extremely popular then BOOM we're gonna have a riverdale situation," @guardicns tweeted. For what it's worth, a lot of people have also shared a photo of Riverdale's Lili Reinhart, Madelaine Petsch, and Camila Mendes wearing Powerpuff Girls Halloween costumes, and said that they're the true live action Powerpuff Girls.

One fan had a good response to people who were still making fun of the reboot. "When the cw powerpuff girls is amazing then you will see.... you will all see," @cfvybees tweeted. "it's helmed by diablo cody!!! all you fake jennifer's body stans smh."

We're reserving judgement on the series until we see it. What else can we do?
