Mass Effect: Andromeda Will Have Crafting, Melee Weapons, Sex, And Violence

Mass Effect: Andromeda, the latest entry in BioWare's ultra-popular space role-playing game, has received an MA 15+ rating from the Australian Classification Board, with the government citing "strong sex scenes and violence" in addition to "online interactivity" as the reason behind its ratings. In the official report, violence, language, and drug use all received "moderate impact" ratings, while sex was classified as "high impact."

That finding should come as no surprise to fans. In all three of the previous Mass Effect games, players could woo Commander Shepard's human and alien crewmates, and a successful romance usually led to a provocative (if ultimately fairly tame) sex scene. With this latest entry, BioWare is trying to find ways for Mass Effect: Andromeda's romantic angles to evolve in "more organic" ways—or, as producer Michael Gamble puts it, the in-game sex is "pretty good."

But while sex is a standard part of Mass Effect, some of Andromeda's other features are brand new. While previous Mass Effect games allowed players to upgrade their gear, Andromeda takes things further with a fully fleshed-out crafting system. On Twitter, lead designer Ian Frazier claimed that Andromeda's crafting opportunities are "endless"—players can even name their own weapons—and shared an example from senior designer Justin Perez, who says he made an assault rifle named "Fast and Furious" during his most recent playthrough.

Melee weapons, including krogan-style hammers, will also make their way into Andromeda's single-player campaign (other than the franchise's omni-blade, melee weapons appeared in previous Mass Effect games' multiplayer modes, but never in single-player). According to Frazier, melee weaponry will get its own dedicated weapons slot, which can be upgraded as the game progresses.

Mass Effect: Andromeda, one of Looper's most-anticipated games of 2017, will be out on March 21, 2017 on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
