How To Craft Items In Oddworld: Soulstorm

Oddworld: Soulstorm, the latest installment in the long-running Oddworld franchise, offers a brand new take on the events of 1998's Abe's Exoddus — one that can stretch out into a significant amount of playing time. And with that significant overhaul comes a ton of new skills for Abe to employ in his mission.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is poised to add plenty of new wrinkles to the franchise. One of these is the game's revamped Quarma system, which allows players to stop in the middle of a level to see if they've built up good or bad karma during their playthrough. Bad Quarma can be built up by choosing to kill Abe's enemies, rather than knocking them out or binding them. If you want to maintain a good Quarma level, you're going to want to craft gadgets and gizmos that will allow you to dispatch foes in a non-lethal manner.

That's right; one of the big new features in Oddworld: Soulstorm is a crafting mechanic. Before you get to work rescuing Abe's fellow Mudokons from the Soulstorm brewery, here's what you need to know about crafting.

Soulstorm's crafting materials and where to find them

In the days leading up to Oddworld: Soulstorm's release, developer Oddworld Inhabitants posted multiple "quick look" videos on YouTube, with each one illustrating an exciting new facet of the game. As explained in Oddworld Inhabitants' video regarding looting and crafting, players can find raw crafting materials in all sorts of places. In Soulstorm, Abe can "loot trash cans, lockers, and crates," as well as fallen or sleeping enemies.

By navigating to the menu's crafting window, players can see exactly what materials are needed to build different weapons and gadgets. For example, the video shows that Abe can craft a Fizzy Pow grenade by combining a Fizzy Pop soda and Blastos mints. Another video from IGN and Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning shows that not every object Abe makes is a weapon. For instance, a Smokescreen can be crafted by combining a Brew Bottle and Detergent.

In Oddworld: Soulstorm, players are encouraged to scavenge as many crafting materials as possible to try in different combinations. You're going to need every resource you can scrounge together to get Abe and his people out alive.
