How The Cast Of Logan Should Really Look

With the rights to certain Marvel characters now at different Hollywood studios, the number of characters in James Mangold's Logan (Hugh Jackman's final film as Wolverine) are a bit limited. Characters in the X-Men franchise haven't typically received the most comic accurate costumes over the years (except for Deadpool), though their civilian looks appear to be mostly in line. The 2017 Logan film isn't any different. But if the cast of Logan received comic accurate looks and costumes, here's how they would really look.

Wolverine

Right from the start, Hugh Jackman's portrayal of James "Logan" Howlett, a.k.a. Wolverine, was clearly going to be different than the traditional comic book version. Perhaps it was because Jackman stands at 6 feet 3 inches, whereas Wolverine is a whole foot shorter than him at 5 feet 3 inches. Or maybe it was because Jackman is Australian, and Wolverine is Canada's most famous superhero. Despite Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine differing from the comic book look, many fans consider him to be the definitive incarnation of the character.

Since James Mangold's Logan appears to be taking inspiration from Mark Millar's Old Man Logan comic series, it will feature an older Wolverine with battle scars and a diminished healing factor. For the most part Jackman nails the look, down to the gray hair (and hairstyle), ripped body, and fatigued look. The trailers have even shown the scarring left behind by injuries and Logan's use of his claws, which are also prominent in the comic series. Disregarding Jackman's height, his depiction of the character is very much comic accurate.

Even though this particular story doesn't require it, Jackman has been playing Wolverine for almost two decades on the big screen and audiences still haven't seen him in his classic, yellow costume yet. And as far as Mangold is concerned it may never happen. "The flesh and blood character is very loyal to that iconoclastic rebel who doesn't seem to be the first to don spandex ... Some fans may be frustrated, but we're trying to be true to his character."

Professor X

Determining how old everyone is in the X-Men movie universe is almost as perplexing as trying to make sense of all the different timelines. For Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X (played by Patrick Stewart), it appears that by the time Logan rolls around he will be in either his late 80s or early-to-mid 90s. We figure by taking into account that he was likely in his late 20s during the events of X-Men: First Class, which took place in 1962, he'll be 62 years older in Logan, which reportedly takes place around 2024.

Throughout the years, Stewart has maintained consistency with his comic book counterpart, whom he looks very much like—having a bald head, a similar facial structure, and roughly the same physique. In fact, of all the actors to appear in X-Men movies over the years, Stewart's Professor X may be the most accurate. Still, the toughest part about Stewart appearing in the film is probably making him look old because he looks mighty fine for someone in his 70s.

X-23

Young up-and-comer Dafne Keen will reportedly be playing Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, in Logan. She is often portrayed as a female-clone and adopted daughter of Wolverine. She first appeared in the X-Men: Evolution animated series in order to have Wolverine appeal more to younger audiences, and was later introduced to the comic world. Just like Wolverine, X-23 possesses retractable adamantium claws, enhanced senses, a healing factor, and superhuman strength. However, we have yet to see Keen display any of these characteristics and abilities in the Logan movie. From what we've seen thus far Keen closely resembles the general look of Laura Kinney, namely her facial structure and dark-colored hair. Although the majority of Kinney's time in the comics depicts her being a teenager, Keen will portray a slightly younger version of the character. Looking ahead, X-23 has since replaced Logan as the new Wolverine in the comic canon, so the studio could potentially have much bigger plans for X-23 down the line.

Caliban

In Logan, Wolverine receives help from Caliban in taking care of an aging Professor X. Caliban's name comes from the character of the same name in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. His father gave him that name because he was born alien-looking. Although his characteristics have changed over the years, he typically appears to have white-purplish skin, a bald head, black eyes, and a yellow sclera and no irises. Over the years, different incarnations have portrayed him being more muscular and monster-like.

We haven't seen much of Caliban (played by Stephen Merchant) yet, with the exception of one first look photo. He's typically shown covered up, so it's hard to say just how accurate his depiction will be. Interestingly, his outfit in the trailer is reminiscent of the look he wore in his first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #148 in 1981. Judging by 20th Century Fox's track record, though, we doubt Merchant will tackle the character's defining features 100 percent. Caliban has typically been portrayed as a towering figure in the comics, and with 6 feet 7 inches Merchant in the role, that stature should definitely carry over.

Donald Pierce

A superhero movie isn't complete without an antagonist, and the cyborg supervillain Donald Pierce will fill that role in Logan. Pierce had a high-ranking position in the Hellfire Club in his original incarnation. His depiction in the film takes inspiration from later versions. The film's take of Pierce looks to be a member of the Reavers, a team of cyborgs aiming to wipe out the mutant race. In the film, in addition to being part of the Reavers, Pierce is the head of security for the Transigen project.

Boyd Holbrook is playing Pierce in the film and shares a likeness to the character, most notably their similar blonde coifs. Certain things are different, though. In the majority of the character's comic book incarnations, he appears wearing a silver armored costume he uses for combat. Other variations of his costume feature a thick coat or long, blue cape. In the movie, we've seen him wear a black shirt with a brown jacket, consistent with the western theme of the film.

It appears Fox and Mangold are basing Holbrook's incarnation of Pierce on an earlier version of the character when he had only a handful of cybernetic limbs. This is evident by the fact that, in the Logan trailer, Holbrook's Pierce is seen having only cybernetic arms and hands. But since he's seen wearing a jacket, it's unclear if other parts of his body have received cybernetic augmentations.

Dr. Zander Rice

In the comics Dr. Zander Rice worked with the Weapon X program and played a pivotal role in the creation of X-23, the same program that effectively turned Logan into the Wolverine. Unfortunately for him, X-23 later kills him in the comics. In the Logan movie, Dr. Rice appears as the surgical head for the Transigen project, which could possibly be this film's spin on the Weapon X program (though we have already seen Weapon X in previous X-Men films).

Richard E. Grant will be playing Dr. Rice in the film, who looks very much like the comic book version of the character. The only apparent difference between the comic book and theatrical version seems to be that Grant's incarnation is a bit older. Still, just as with Boyd Holbrook and Donald Pierce, we doubt Fox will do anything drastic with the character's look in the film.

Mister Sinister and the mystery roles

At this stage in development there are numerous cast members, such as Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal, and Elizabeth Rodriguez, who have unconfirmed roles in the film. We've also heard some characters, such as Mister Sinister, will reportedly appear in the film (though the casting has not been revealed as of yet).
