The New Star Wars Series Coming To Disney+ That Mandalorian Fans Will Love

Good news, Star Wars fans: The creative minds behind The Mandalorian aren't done poking around the galaxy far, far away yet.

During its 2020 Investor Day event, Disney announced a new series from executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni: Rangers of the New Republic. No release date, or even a production timeline, has yet been announced, so details on the series are scarce.

The word "rangers" evokes more of the Western tropes and themes that The Mandalorian has used so effectively throughout its run — except instead of a lone Leonean gunslinger, it sounds like the series is more likely to follow a group of white hats restoring order out on the frontier.

We do know that Rangers of the New Republic will take place in the same time period as The Mandalorian, a few years after the events of Return of the Jedi and a few decades before The Force Awakens. Rangers of the New Republic is expected to cross over with both The Mandalorian and the newly announced Ahsoka series, which will star Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. Some — or all — of those shows will build up to a major series-spanning event.

Who might be the Rangers of the New Republic?

Mando's (Pedro Pascal) journey on his series has already rubbed up against the New Republic multiple times, often in uncomfortable ways. He participated in one prison break on a New Republic ship — and, as of this writing, before the release of The Mandalorian's chapter 15, is plotting what seems to be a second. Mando was what can only be described as "pulled over" by a pair of New Republic X-wings in the series' tenth chapter, which eventually led to him crash-landing the Razor Crest on the ice planet of Maldo Kreis.

But Mando's friend and ally Cara Dune (Gina Carano) has gone respectable and taken up a New Republic badge as a Marshal to help clean up Nevarro. Plus, those X-wing pilots did save him from the giant spider monsters on Maldo Kreis, and implied that his role in the prison escape was forgiven.

Time will tell whether Rangers of the New Republic will follow Dune and/or pilots Trapper Wolf (Filoni) and Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) as they attempt to extend the peace of the galaxy a little further out toward its frontier, or if the series will center around someone else entirely. Park rangers? Power Rangers? The Scottish soccer team Rangers? Who knows? It's a big galaxy, and Disney and Lucasfilm — not to mention Favreau and Filoni — seem determined to explore as much of it as they can.
