Everything We Know About For Honor's Gryphon

Ubisoft recently dropped a trailer announcing the newest For Honor hero. It's Gryphon, a.k.a. Holden Cross, a onetime member of the knightly Lawbringer faction who's now gone mercenary. Gryphon will be available on Dec. 10. That's also the start date for Season 4 of  Year Four: The Reckoning, a full year of new For Honor content that includes four distinct seasons, thematic events, and the two new heroes, all available to players with the game's battle pass. Overall, Gryphon be 29th hero from the game's ever-expanding roster

For Honor got off to a rocky start when the game saw a 95% reduction of players within three months after launching back in 2017. However, Ubisoft managed to entice many fans back via additional content and limited-time events. Ubisoft has confirmed that For Honor will be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X once Season 4 kicks off, and both next-gen versions will support 60 fps. The publisher hasn't yet announced any plans for a Year 5 that could theoretically launch in 2021, nor has Ubisoft announced a proper sequel.

For now, here's everything we know about the newest character.

Gryphon, or the warrior formerly known as Holden Cross

Gryphon can be purchased from first-party stores for $7.99, as part of a package that includes the new hero, an exclusive ornament, an Elite Outfit, three loot crates, and seven days of Champion Status. If players are willing to wait a bit, Gryphon will be unlockable for 15,000 steel starting Dec. 24.

In keeping with his Lawbringer origins, Gryphon wields a polearm weapon, in this case a two-handed bardiche axe that easily slices through crowds of enemies. Based on the trailer, he also appears to have a one-handed crossbow for ranged attacks, as well as a head-butt ability.

Gryphon/Holden Cross first appeared in the game's single-player campaign and originally belonged to the Blackstone Legion, where he was second-in-command to the game's main antagonist, Apollyon. He later defected to the Iron Legion and led the assault on Blackstone Fortress. After Apollyon's death, he joined a mercenary guild, which now allows him to fight alongside warriors from all the game's cultures. Apollyon herself was the last new hero added to the game earlier this year. She debuted on Aug. 6, 2020, during Year 4 Season 2, and now goes by the name The Warmonger.
