Pop culture loves its apocalyptic movies, like Mad Max, as well as post-apocalyptic video games like Fallout. Much like those end of the world scenarios, one game was lost underneath layers of dust, to be forever forgotten.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was a game that was being developed by The 3DO Company. The game would have slotted players into the role of Abaddon, who must unite three individuals and combine their power to put an end to the destruction of the world. The game would allow players to engage in various combat systems and stop the world from meeting its demise.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was underway and expected to be released in the fall of 2003. According to IGN, it was the biggest project that The 3DO Company had ever undertaken, and it would be their first M-rated title. Each character was designed with specific weapons and unique special abilities. The 3DO Company had gone out of their way to contract some big-name voice actors, such as Tim Curry.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse never made it onto shelves, and never even made it through a demo phase. Why did this game never come to light?

What happened to Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

According to Unseen64, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was scrapped when The 3DO Company went bankrupt in 2003. It is possible that they may have spent just a little too much money on too many big names. Stan Winston, who had been involved in larger science fiction movies such as the original Jurassic Park and Terminator, had been contracted as a video game producer. The eight million dollar budget was not enough to get Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse across the finish line. The 3DO Company was liquidated and its assets were auctioned off to numerous other companies.

Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse never released more than some concept art and basic demos of the game. No company wanted to take a risk in attempting to bring this title to life. Four Horsemen of Apocalypse would eventually fade away into an endless abyss. The game might never see the light of day, the story was eventually adapted into a graphic novel by author Michael Mendheim and Judge Dredd artist Simon Bisley.
