Star Wars: Tales From The Galaxy's Edge - What We Know So Far

It looks like the Star Wars game franchise is about to hit the VR circuit once again. ILMxLAB, the studio that released Vader Immortal for Oculus VR last year, has a new title on the way: Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge.

The game's trailer, which premiered on Oct. 21, 2020, gave everyone a peek at the new VR Star Wars action game, revealing the setting, characters, and glimpses of the story. An announcement from the Oculus website claims that the game will be an "immersive" adventure that is sure to entertain both Star Wars fans and VR enthusiasts.

The game takes place at the Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu, which Disney enthusiasts may remember as the same setting from the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge experience in Disneyland. Fortunately, gamers wanting to play Tales from the Galaxy's Edge will not have to travel to the happiest place on earth to do so.

So when and how will fans be able to play the newest Stars Wars adventure? Here is what's known about Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge so far.

What is the release date for Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge?

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is set to be released on Nov. 19, 2020, just in time for the holidays. The previous VR Star Wars game developed by ILMxLAB, Vader Immortal, was episodic. While it hasn't been confirmed for certain, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge appears to be a full, single installment.

It seems like Star Wars game developers never have time to rest. Star Wars Tales from the Galaxy's Edge quickly follows Star Wars: Squadrons, which released on Oct. 2, 2020. Before that, there was the Star Wars: Journey to Batuu expansion pack for The Sims 4, which arrived on Sept. 8, 2020. And there is plenty more to come as 2021 draws near. In a statement made by EA's Motive studio manager Patrick Klaus in October 2020, there are many more projects in development that Star Wars gamers can look forward to. "The team is super talented and we're all striving to make aspirational games that push the boundaries of what players expect now and in the future," said Klaus.

What platforms will Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge be on?

Like Vader Immortal, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge will be premiering exclusively on Oculus VR. Oculus is a division of Facebook, and has been developing games and accessories for the home VR experience since 2012. The newest headset from the company — the Oculus Quest 2 — has seen huge success thanks to its accurate tracking, high resolution graphics, and a processor that has been greatly improved from the first Quest headset. PC Magazine even put it in their top spot for "The Best VR Headsets for 2020."

Those who might be disappointed by the limited platform release of Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, take heart! Vader Immortal was released with all three episodes for Playstation VR on Aug. 25, 2020, so players at least have some hope the same treatment will be given to Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge eventually.

What characters will be in Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge?

From what can be seen in the newest trailer, it looks like Star Wars; Tales from the Galaxy Edge will be bringing out some beloved characters from the franchise, along with a few new ones. The trailer teases the appearances of R2-D2, C-3PO, and even Yoda, the ultimate Jedi Master himself. How and in what capacity these characters will be involved in the game is not yet known.

One new character that'll be introduced in the game is Seezelslak, an Azumel bartender "with a penchant for story-telling." The actor behind Seezelslak is SNL's Bobby Moynihan, a long-time Star Wars fan who also showed up in Star Wars Resistance. The character is upbeat, friendly, and according to Moynihan, "a little kooky."

Another character players will meet in the game is Tara Rushin, the captain of a lethal band of Quarren pirates. From the looks of the trailer, Rushin could be the game's main antagonist. Debra Wilson plays Tara, and describes the character as relentless and determined. "When she has a goal, she will not take no for an answer," Wilson said in an interview with StarWars.com.
