Doctor Who: The Edge Of Reality - What We Know So Far

Doctor Who has been a staple of the science fiction community since it first aired on the BBC in 1963, but the show's revival in 2005 saw an explosion of new fans and renewed love for the series. The title character, simply as the Doctor, is a humanoid alien and Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey.

The Doctor has had many adventures throughout time and space, garnering a number of friends and enemies along the way. In Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, a new game based on the Doctor Who license, actress Jodie Whitaker will reprise her as the Doctor from both the television series and from Maze Theory's first VR game, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time.

What can fans expect from Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality? What awaits in this project that Whovians desperately hope will turn out to be good? Here's what we know so far.

What is the release date for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality?

According to the game's trailer, Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will release sometime in Spring 2021, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch. The reason for this date could be to hype up the premiere of the TV series' newest season, which is slated to air in the fall of next year. Will the show keep to that schedule, with the pandemic causing delays for film and TV over the last year? That remains a question.

At least fans will have multiple games to quench their thirst for Whovian content. There will also be a mobile title called The Lonely Assassins, which will be a "puzzle-based" suspense and mystery adventure that features the famous Doctor Who nemeses, the Weeping Angels.

Is there a trailer for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality?

As the trailer for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality begins, viewers can hear the voice of the 13th Doctor reviewing the events of Doctor Who: The Edge of Time. The trailer gives fans a glimpse of familiar Doctor Who icons, including the TARDIS and popular baddies like the Daleks, Cybermen, and Weeping Angels.

The biggest moment comes at the end of the video, where fans get a surprise appearance by the 10th Doctor, voiced by David Tennant. The image is blurry, but there is no mistaking that blue-suited, skinny physique and spiked-up hair. A familiar voice says, "I'm the Doctor . . . just probably not the one you were expecting."

What characters are in Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality?

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality will likely see the return of characters from the first game, including the current 13th Doctor, performed by actress Jodie Whittaker. There will probably be the Weeping Angels and Daleks to contend with as well, who also appeared in Doctor Who: The Edge of Time.

The only new additions we can say almost for certain will be in the new game are the Cybermen and the 10th Doctor, who both appear in the teaser trailer. The Cybermen are a race of sentient mechanical beings whose sole purpose is to convert humans into their ranks, taking away their emotions and wiping out all traces of their humanity. The 10th Doctor, played by David Tennant, appeared on the new Doctor Who TV series in 2006, and (along with companion Rose Tyler) became a big hit with the fans. It seems that Tennant will be reprising his role in the game, which will surely be a huge draw for Whovians.

What is the story for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality?

Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality follows the story of the first game, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, in which the 13th Doctor recruited the player to save the universe from a "Reality Glitch" that could destroy all of time and space. The player was able to utilize tools such as the Sonic Screwdriver to solve puzzles and get out of dangerous situations.

The player's mission was to collect Time Crystals with the help of the Doctor's guidance while they explored various locations — such as an alien world, a spaceship, and a creepy haunted house in Victorian era London. After the hero saved the world from certain annihilation, it was implied that their work was far from over. According to the Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality's official website, the story continues from where The Edge of Time left off, and the player will "partner with the Doctor to unearth a greater mystery."
