This Is How To Unlock Co-Op In Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a surprise hit that stands a solid chance of being immortalized as one of 2020's best video games. When first announced, audiences derided the title as little more than a Breath of the Wild clone, but some detractors have since eaten their words and adopted the banner of Genshin adoration.

What sets Genshin Impact apart from many titles is its mouthful of a genre: free-to-play multi-platform gacha MMORPG. You can explore the world, complete quests, and team up with your friends — or random strangers — for loot. Sure, you could spend real money to use the game's gacha system and roll the wheel of RNG, hoping it rewards you with a powerful character or weapon. But, if you want to experience the pinnacle of MMO gameplay (and save some money), you are better off forging alliances with other players, delving into dungeons, and slaying fiendish beasts for epic drops.

You don't start Genshin Impact with co-op unlocked, however. You have to earn the game's permission to create and join parties. If you want to know how to unlock co-op in Genshin Impact, you've come to the right place.

It's as easy as one, two, level 16

Since co-op is a crucial part of any MMO, Genshin Impact doesn't hide the feature behind convoluted questlines, paywalls, or grind challenges. The only requirement for co-op is reaching Adventure Rank (AR) 16. Once there, you are good to go.

Don't confuse Adventure Rank with character levels, though. Your AR determines your World Level (i.e., game difficulty), the rewards that drop from enemies and Ley Line Outcrops, and the Abyssal Domains you can visit. Raising your Adventure Rank is as easy as walking in Genshin Impact. It doesn't matter if you complete quests, solve puzzles, or level up characters — every action brings you one step closer to AR 16 and co-op.

Now, you should keep some caveats in mind when starting a co-op journey. You can only join players in the same regional server and only if they have the same World Level. Furthermore, you can only team up for Abyssal Domains, Ley Line Outcrops, commissions, and general monster/boss fighting. Finally, the more players in a team, the fewer characters each participant can bring, so communicate to maximize character synergy and minimize element overlap.
