Why The Social Reckoning Bombed At The Box Office

Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Reckoning" seems to be going through its own reckoning at the box office. The biopic legal thriller companion piece to the Sorkin-penned 2010 David Fincher film "The Social Network" has been struggling to make ends meet, and watching Looper's video above will let you know just why the movie's box office haul has been disappointing.

"The Social Reckoning" depicts an era when Facebook's reputation took a serious hit, and has come out in the aftermath of said hit — not to mention a turbulent time when it comes to how we think about social media magnates in general. As such, the 2026 movie is in a radically different space than the origin story predecessor, culturally speaking.

Quality-wise, "The Social Reckoning" hardly surpasses "The Social Network," either. Where "The Social Network" won three Academy Awards and stands at an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, "The Social Reckoning" currently has a Tomatometer rating of just 55% — and based on those numbers, it's probably fair to say that it's unlikely to beat its predecessor on the award season front, either.

The Social Reckoning is having a really rough time at the box office

Looper's own "The Social Reckoning" review deemed the movie entirely unnecessary, and based on its opening weekend box office haul of just $5.5 million, the viewers have reached a similar conclusion. Combined with the overseas box office of $3.5 million, the film opened to just $9 million at the box office against a $30 million budget. Not exactly stellar numbers.

"The Social Network" got some things about the true story wrong, but it was an engaging and captivating film that Metacritic considers one of the only five near-perfect movies of the 2010s. It also made over $224 million at the global box office against a $40 million budget. Any way you look at it, "The Social Reckoning" has very little chance of hitting a home run like its predecessor — and Looper's video above will let you know precisely what led to the new movie becoming such a flop.
