To survive, you'll need to focus on mastering new challenges, finding aquatic methods of navigating the map, and uncovering all the Season 3 secrets.
Loot Sharks are one of the fresh additions you'll encounter. As the name suggests, these creatures act as both a threat and a source of loot. They also serve a third purpose, acting as a method of transportation. There are easier ways to get around in Fortnite, but water-skiing behind a shark adds a certain cool factor you didn't know you were missing.
To become a true shark wrangler, you need to learn the ways of the Fortnite Loot Shark, including where to find them, how to take them down, and how to ride them. It's not too difficult, and it'll give you a definite advantage in the battle royale game.
What you need to know about Fortnite's Loot Sharks
Sharks appear to spawn rarely in Fortnite, so you may have to search for a bit as you traverse this watery wonderland. Your best chance is to ride around different bodies of water rather than just waiting for one to come to you. Just look for that telltale fin and remember that there are other things in the water — fish and the new whirlpools — that may also catch your eye. Eurogamer suggests sticking to more island-like structures such as the Fortilla. Also, keep an eye on NPCs, because they'll shoot at sharks on sight, and the sharks' health bars can be seen from a distance.
One of the Week 1 challenges centers on damaging Loot Sharks, which you can accomplish by hitting one with a weapon. They're called Loot Sharks because once you kill one, you'll get equipment and other useful items. Use plenty of ammo, because they are pretty strong. And stay out of the water. Not that this will keep you completely safe, because these dangerous and item-hungry creatures will actually jump out at you from a distance and cause you significant damage when you're on dry land. They can even damage buildings.
How to take a Loot Shark for a ride
Riding a shark is actually fairly simple, once you've gone to the trouble of finding one. First, make sure you have a fishing rod on you. If you don't have one yet, look in Chests, on the ground, and inside the barrels next to bodies of water. Supply drops and Supply Llamas may also have them.
Once you have a fishing rod and have located your prey, simply act like you're trying to catch a fish. Just know, this isn't Animal Crossing and the sharks are not going to happily submit to being put into your pocket. Instead, once the shark grabs your hook, water skis will magically appear on your feet and you'll go for a ride. You can even guide your shark onto land, although it doesn't move very well when it's not swimming in the sea.
You have full control, so you can jump and go wherever you like, and you can shoot your weapon too. You can also ride the shark to other locations on the map, although you'll have to keep the map's layout in mind when considering where sharks can go.
