Marvel's Spider-Man 2 release date, trailer, villains and story

Marvel's Spider-Man, released in 2018, was a smash success. The PlayStation 4 exclusive from Insomniac Games brought our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man to life in an emotional adventure full of action and good old-fashioned super heroics.

The game has proven to be such a hit with fans that Marvel has even expanded on video game Peter Parker's adventures in a comic book series, Marvel's Spider-Man: City At War. Even wilder, PlayStation Spidey popped up in the mainstream comics as part of the massive Spider-Geddon crossover, which takes place after the events of the video game.

With so much love for this latest video game incarnation of our favorite wall-crawler, it's easy to see why fans are ready for the sequel. While details on Spidey's next PlayStation adventure are scarce, let's take a look at what we do know, as well as some juicy rumors.

Luckily for us, Marvel's Spider-Man managed to include plenty of small details and hints towards where the next adventure may lead us.

What is the release date for Marvel's Spider-Man 2?

We don't yet have an idea of when the sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man will be swinging onto consoles. However, a recent leak posted to Reddit suggests we may see it as soon as next year. While this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, it should be mentioned that this same Reddit user previously leaked correct details regarding Capcom's Resident Evil 3 remake.

We'll be sure to update this and let you know as soon as an official release date is revealed.

Is there a trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2?

There isn't a trailer yet. In fact, we don't even have any kind of early footage to go on.

However, considering how early fans received gameplay footage from Marvel's Spider-Man before its release, we hopefully won't have to wait terribly long. As soon as there is a trailer, we'll be sure to dissect every last superpowered moment.

Which villains will appear in Marvel's Spider-Man 2?

While there haven't been any official announcements regarding the villains Spider-Man will face in the next game, there are plenty of candidates worth discussing.

Chief among these is Venom, whose presence was hinted at by an ominous cutscene at the end of the first game.

It appears as though this universe's Venom may be Peter's old friend Harry Osborne, who we briefly see floating in a tank with some kind of living black substance. This would be an interesting way to introduce one of Spidey's greatest foes and up Peter Parker's own emotional investment. And speaking of the Osborne family, Harry's father Norman Osborne plays a rather large role in the events of the first game. Though we never see his villainous counterpart, it's safe to assume that we'll see Norman become the Green Goblin at some point in the future.

Lastly, considering the fact that the tragic friendship between Otto Octavius and Peter Parker was such a major part of the first game, it would be a wasted opportunity not to have Doctor Octopus feature in the sequel in some way.

What is the story of Marvel's Spider-Man 2?

We don't have an official idea of the story yet, but the ending of the first game left a few threads dangling.

For instance, the first game ends with the death of Peter's Aunt May, so he will likely be working through some feelings of guilt as the second game begins. Helping him through this will likely be Mary Jane Watson, Peter's estranged girlfriend with whom he has rekindled a romance.

Perhaps the biggest unexplored thread is the revelation that Peter's young friend Miles Morales has developed spider powers of his own. The sequel will likely follow Peter's efforts to train Miles to be a superhero in his own right. We already saw a bit of Miles' training at the end of the Silver Lining DLC. Also, considering how beloved the Miles-focused Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was, featuring Miles in a larger capacity in the sequel is almost a no-brainer.
