Emmy Nominations 2016: Game Of Thrones Leads With 23

Game of Thrones, Veep, and American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson were among the top shows nominated on July 14, 2016 for the 68th annual Emmy Awards.

Game of Thrones, last year's winner for best drama series, led the tally with a stunning 23 nominations, including best drama. Joining the beloved HBO fantasy series in that category are Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, House of Cards, Homeland, Mr. Robot and The Americans.

Thrones also made a strong showing in the individual acting categories. Last year's winner, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), earned his sixth-consecutive nomination for best supporting actor. Also nominated is co-star Kit Harrington (Jon Snow). The show picked up a stunning three nominations in best supporting actress, including returning nominees Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and first-time nominee Maisie Williams (Arya Stark).

Other high-profile nominees on the drama side include reigning best actress winner Viola Davis (Annalise Keating) for How to Get Away with Murder; Rami Malek (Elliot Alderson) for Mr. Robot; and surprise nominees Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, who play married couple Philip and Elizabeth Jennings on The Americans.

Meanwhile, the reigning winner for best comedy series, the HBO political satire Veep, will duke it out for a second-consecutive win against black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, Transparent and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Veep also picked up four acting nominations, two of which went to last year's winners, Julia Louis Dreyfus (Selina Meyer) and Tony Hale (Gary Walsh). Also nominated are Anna Chlumsky (Amy Brookheimer) and Matt Walsh (Mike McLintock). The show leads the comedy categories with 17 nominations total.

FX's American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson dominated the limited series categories with 22 nominations, including best limited series. Cuba Gooding Jr. (O.J. Simpson) and Courtney B. Vance (Johnnie Cochran) were nominated for best actor, and Sarah Paulson (Marcia Clark) received a nod for best actress. Supporting actor nominations went to David Schwimmer (Robert Kardashian), John Travolta (Robert Shapiro) and Sterling K. Brown (Christopher Darden), among many others.
