Tetris Will Be A Sci-Fi Movie Trilogy

If you weren't sure the world needed a feature-length movie based on the video game Tetris, then this news will flip you upside-down. Producer Larry Kasanoff told Empire that the upcoming film adaptation has been expanded into a trilogy. Kasanoff says the film was expanded not out of greed, but "because the story we conceived is so big. This isn't us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. It's just a big story."

The original Tetris video game is strictly a puzzle with no narrative, but Kasanoff (who spearheaded the film adaptation of Mortal Kombat) said you'll never guess the plot of the movie. "We're not going to have blocks with feet running around," he said. "But it's great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!" The producer is aiming for something bigger and more meaningful, but revealed only one ambiguous hint. "I came up with the idea as I was thinking about Tetris and the theme of creating order out of chaos."

Of course, that can mean a lot of things. Remember the 2015 adaptation of the classic board game Battleship? It was about an alien invasion.

Looper scored an exclusive interview with Kasanoff, and he told us he's glad people might be skeptical. "I love it when people say, 'How the hell are they going to do this?' And the jokes people are making about it are funny," he said. "We just think it's terrific because people are interested and engaged, tweeting and talking and writing about it." And if you've got a theory about the plot, Kasanoff promises you're probably way off. "No one has come remotely close to figuring out what we're doing."
