Watch The New Star Trek Beyond Trailer
J.J. Abrams' recent Star Trek movies might be a little too action-oriented for some diehard Trekkers, but if there's one thing the rebooted franchise still does better than just about any other, it's trailers. The first promo clip for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond proved a rare misstep, prompting backlash so severe that Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty in the movies) outright denounced it, claiming it didn't represent the movie. It isn't hard to understand the consternation—you don't expect to hear the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in a Star Trek trailer—but the newly released third trailer goes back to the pop music well with significantly better results.
That's Rhianna's "Sledgehammer," a dramatic tune that pairs well with the epic visuals of the trailer. There's also a ton of new footage, a majority of which appears to be new shots of the Enterprise being torn to shreds by a swarm of ships. The most promising theme running through all three trailers so far is the notable lack of references back to classic Trek storylines. This appears to be a unique standalone story that doesn't have its roots planted in the original series or in any of the films, as opposed to Star Trek Into Darkness, which retold the plot from Wrath of Kahn.
