Friday The 13th Producer Leaks Reboot Details

Hockey-masked maniac Jason Voorhees will return to theaters in the near future, but we're still not quite sure what to expect from the next installment in the Friday the 13th franchise. For a time, it was rumored the series would go the found footage route; thankfully, that's not happening. Instead, it sounds like Jason will be brutally killing teenagers in a parallel world.

Yes, you read that right. As Friday the 13th producer Brad Fuller explained in an interview with iHorror, the new film won't necessarily be an origin story—instead, they're looking for more of a fresh start. "Origin isn't really the right word for this movie," said Fuller. "The word origin got out and everyone's calling it an origin film now, but that isn't exactly the direction we're taking. It's more of an alternate world that we're creating for Jason—an alternate space, alternate reality—in this film."

Fuller also commented on the news that Jason's mother Pamela—who, as Friday the 13th diehards no doubt recall, was the first film's villain—is set to reappear. "Yes, Pamela and Jason are together in this film, but this is the same Jason we all know and love," he explained. "He's Jason; he kills—he kills teenagers. We went down the origin route with the second Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, and I think when you go to deep into a character's origin, the character stops being scary at some point. I'm not worried about demystifying Jason by revealing parts of his backstory, which most of the fans are familiar with."

When aging film properties are rebooted for modern audiences, they tend to over-explain why a character is who they are. J.J. Abrams seemed to find a nice balance between backstory and film narrative with Captain Kirk in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, as did Casino Royale with James Bond. Conversely, Rob Zombie arguably spent too much time in his Halloween reboot explaining why Michael Myers was a crazy murderer in a mask.

However they pull off the "alternate reality" concept, the Friday the 13th team is clearly aiming for a vintage Jason Voorhees experience. Fuller went on to quell fears that the next Jason movie will veer too far away from the source material, adding, "The story takes place between the late 1970s and the early 1980s. There is a summer camp, and there are camp counsellors."
