Preacher Season 4 Trailer Promises Hell Will Break Loose

Do you have a moment to talk about our not-quite lord and savior, Jesse Custer?

AMC brought the apocalyptic Preacher season 4 trailer to San Diego Comic-Con 2019, promising that small-town preacher Jesse (Dominic Cooper) will face the wrath of Hell and the prophecies of Heaven on his final journey to reach the Man Upstairs.

IGN delivered unto the internet the footage of the fourth and final season of Preacher in an exclusive break.

The season 4 trailer gives Preacher fans a look at God (played by Mark Harelik) and the new ruler of Hell Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor), who both appear to be conspiring with Herr Starr (Pip Torrens) and the Grail for different reasons. Though Jesse and his badass girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) raced off to rescue their vampire bestie Cassidy (Joe Gilgun) from the clutches of the evil Grail during season 3, and while Herr Starr abandoned his mission to make Jesse the messiah on that installment as well, these nemeses have hardly exited Jesse and co.'s orbit. The Grail's still torturing Cassidy, Her Starr is clearly up to no good, and Hitler's lending a helping hand to Jesus' last living descendant, Humperdoo (Tyson Ritter).

If the Preacher season 4 trailer looks capital-W weird, it's because that's the exact vibe the series' team was going for with the final season. Executive producer Seth Rogen explained at the Preacher Comic-Con panel (via SYFY Wire), "We pushed it crazier and crazier and crazier... there's a shot of God creating dinosaurs... When my partner Evan [Goldberg] sent a note to the VFX crew asking if we could add a butthole to one of the dinosaurs, I knew the show had gone off the rails. And to their credit, they added it."

He also promised that the fourth and final season of Preacher will tie up everything it needs to, and do so in a manner most satisfying: "Just a sheer mass of insanity was more the thing that people seemed to like about the show. In combination with the characters and the stories, it seemed like people just liked it to move at a pace that was exciting and we tried to do that more this season, for sure."

Preacher season 4 is set to premiere two back-to-back episodes on Sunday, August 4 on AMC.
