Halo Season 2: How The Flood Could Be A Gamechanger For The Series

The last year has seen video game adaptations reach an unprecedented level of success. While these types of projects have mainly been a source of disappointment for the last few decades, big hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and HBO's "The Last of Us" have shown how widely different gaming franchises can be adapted to the screen successfully.

While Paramount+'s "Halo" series hasn't caused quite the stir that those adaptations did, it was well-received enough that it can still make its mark with the upcoming second season. Introducing series mainstays like Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) and Cortana (Jen Taylor), Season 1 also saw the Spartans facing off against The Covenant. Still, another central aspect of the game franchise has been ignored thus far in the series.

Fans of the first-person shooter franchise will no doubt recall that the titular Halo constructs were built to protect the universe from an unstoppable species of parasitic aliens called The Flood. Considering that they are the main threat for the first three games in the series, it's highly likely that they will appear in Season 2 of the Paramount+ adaptation.

When The Flood arrive they will change the conflict forever

If you don't know what The Flood is or don't remember, they're named for how quickly they overwhelm their hosts and how they can obliterate and absorb any resistance in a shockingly efficient and chaotic manner. Basically, any time you run into The Flood in "Halo," the rule is to run for your life.

Considering how deadly The Flood is, the "Halo" TV series could follow suit with "Halo 2" and "Halo 3," which sees branches within the UNSC and The Covenant seeking to broker an alliance to take on the species that threatens them all. However, being that the series has deviated pretty far from the source material thus far, it's hard to know how close it will follow the games from here.

Still, The Flood is too big of an aspect of the story to simply leave out. With that in mind, "Halo" fans can expect them to show up sooner rather than later. For the biggest impact, the writers behind the series should have this overwhelming existential threat appear in either the Season 2 premiere or its finale, as either one would be the perfect place to tease the massive threat that they pose to the universe.
