The Car Crash Injury Mayim Bialik Hid For A Season Of The Big Bang Theory

Actors hide things from their audiences all the time, in case you weren't aware and were looking for a way to think about your trust issues even while you're just trying to relax in front of the TV. Think of all the times an actress has gotten pregnant in real life and spent an entire season of television carrying around a giant purse as some sort of smokescreen, even though everyone can clearly tell what's going on.

You might be surprised, though, to learn that Mayim Bialik of "The Big Bang Theory" managed to hide a catastrophic injury while filming the hit show. In August of 2012, Bialik got into a terrible car accident before the sixth season aired, requiring her to hide said injury from the cameras.

"Mark Cendrowski is an amazing director, so it's not going to be obvious. We're going to work around it," Bialik told TVLine ahead of the Season 6 premiere. "As long as you don't see me walking and swinging my arm awkwardly, we're making it work." One major Amy Farrah-Fowler character trait was apparently going to be off-limits, though. "I will not be playing the harp for some time," Bialik said, saying she had a major loss of dexterity that would make such motions impossible for a while.

Mayim Bialik's injury was pretty serious

While on her way to lunch with her family, Bialik got into a car accident, and as she wrote on her own blog, her injuries were bad... but could have been worse. Noting that she came away from the accident with a "severely impaired right hand," Bialik wrote, "I didn't tear any artery, nerve, or tendons. It could have been so much worse."

By the following year, though, it seemed like Bialik's recovery was still quite slow. Though she told E! News that she did not "almost lose a hand," clearing uo rumors that that actually happened, she did say, "I sustained significant injuries for which I am still recovering and will continue to be recovering [...] I'm aware of it every day not being one hundred percent. At least it wasn't my face torn open."

Bialik played the character of Amy Farrah Fowler from the series' third season until its final twelfth one, serving as a much-needed feminine energy alongside Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and the love interest to the bizarre, prickly Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons). In any case, though that injury was understandably devastating for her in real life, she managed to make it work during filming without making too many waves.
