Deadliest Catch's Johnathan Hillstrand Stresses The Importance Of Eating While On Board

"Deadliest Catch" is a series that chronicles the lives of several daring crab fishermen who brave the harsh conditions of the Bering Sea. The series' unfortunate title is derived from the incredibly high risk of death and injury that comes with this profession — not only because of the sheer chaos of the open ocean but also because of the grueling work conditions that these fishermen must endure in order to survive and make a profit (via the CDC).

The captains and crew members of "Deadliest Catch" frequently emphasize just how taxing this job can be, with most fishermen enduring a ridiculously low amount of sleep on top of freezing weather and dangerous machinery. Indeed, both mental and physical exhaustion are major issues for the cast of "Deadliest Catch" — ones which cannot be taken lightly, as every member of the crew must be at the top of their game in order to keep things safe and running smoothly.

As such, it should come as no surprise that these crew members are always trying to keep their bodies in the best condition possible — something which Captain Johnathan Hillstrand says starts with eating enough on board.

Hillstrand says that he makes sure his crew eats good, regardless of the cost

During a behind-the-scenes interview with KOOL 101.7, Captain Johnathan Hillstrand spoke about the enormous amount of food he packs on board his F/V Time Bandit, emphasizing that he and his crew need to eat well to perform their jobs.

"We go out of control ... if I don't make any money I want to eat good," Hillstrand said. "My boat eats good. And if your guys don't eat they get worthless and weak. I mean, you just get run down." Hillstrand went on to reference how the crew already isn't getting enough sleep, so he decided that they would have more than enough to eat. Although it might seem like common sense, Hillstrand's comments make it clear that eating enough food is an absolutely crucial part of keeping the crew in top condition, and something he makes sure to prepare for every time they set out.

In any case, it's clear that Johnathan Hillstrand is deathly serious about his crew's eating habits and health, and perhaps fans ought to keep an eye out for the Time Bandit's fridge to see exactly how much food the crew is packing for each voyage
