Coco Wins Academy Award For Best Animated Feature Film

Coco is officially an Oscar winner. The Pixar film took home the trophy for Best Animated Feature Film at Sunday night's ceremony, beating out The Boss Baby, The Breadwinner, Ferdinand, and Loving Vincent.

Coco follows 12-year-old Miguel (newcomer Anthony Gonzalez), a young boy from a shoemaker's family who dreams of becoming a musician like his idol, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), despite his family having banned music for generations. When Miguel goes to retrieve de la Cruz's guitar, he ends up transporting himself to the Land of the Dead, where he goes on an adventure to find out his real family history.

The movie featured an all-Latino voice cast, also including Gael Garcia Bernal, Alanna Ubach, Renee Victor, Edward James Olmos, Ana Ofelia Murguia, Alfonso Arau, Selene Luna, Cheech Marin, Gabriel Iglesias, Sofia Espinosa, and Jaime Camil. The movie also won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Remember Me."

Coco hit theaters in November, opening to $50.8 million and the number one spot at the box office. The movie, which was the highest-grossing film of all-time in Mexico, made $739.9 million worldwide, including $208.4 million domestic. Coco was directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina based on a script from Molina and Matthew Aldrich.
