Star Wars: The Last Jedi To Be Released On 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray

For some of the most widely-seen movies of all time, the films of the Star Wars saga sure do have a weird relationship with home video.

The original, non-"special edition" versions of the movies being outrageously unavailable is one thing, but the series has also been notoriously slow to come to new formats like Blu-ray or Ultra HD.

Even though 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs have been coming out since March 2016, none of the Star Wars movies have yet seen release on it. Not 2015's The Force Awakens, or 2016's Rogue One, or any of the original movies in any edition.

It's not a surprise, even though it doesn't make a lot of sense—after all it took three-and-a-half years for Star Wars to come to Blu-ray in the first place. Still for one of the benchmark special-effects-heavy blockbuster franchises, it's a weird oversight. If Star Trek can keep its releases on the bleeding edge of technology, why can't Star Wars?

According to the team at Making Star Warsthat may all be changing next year. Though no release date has yet been announced—no surprise, considering the movie just hit theaters—Amazon UK has a pre-order page up for a 4K Ultra HD release of The Last Jedi, which will make it the first picture in the franchise to adopt the high-tech format.

As anyone who's seen the movie would agree, this is definitely a film that's going to look fantastic in Ultra HD.

There's no word yet on if previous movies in the series will follow in Last Jedi's wake, but it stands to reason that at least Episode IX will come out on the same format.

Knowing Disney, we might have to wait a couple of years before we get a chance to pick up a 4K Ultra HD package along the lines of Star Wars: The More Complete Saga—but at least it's probably going to happen. Now give us the original movies, Disney! Help us, you're our only hope.
