Only Murders In The Building Season 3 Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot And More Details

Over the course of two seasons, "Only Murders in the Building" guided fans through the cozy yet deadly world of the Arconia, where we followed three misfit heroes — washed-up actor Charles-Haden Savage, down-on-his-luck Broadway producer Oliver Putnam, and the lonely lone wolf Mabel Mora. Together, this trio came together and solved not one but two murders over the course of the show, all while charming audiences with their scrappy little podcast.

But now, they've got another killing on their hands to deal with. "Only Murders in the Building" Season 2 left off with a major cliffhanger, perfectly setting up the stakes for the third season. But what else do we know about the upcoming installment in Hulu's popular murder mystery show? Well, from clues about casting to twists and turns when it comes to plot details, here's everything we know so far about "Only Murders in the Building" Season 3.

When will Only Murders in the Building Season 3 be released?

When will we be returning to the Arconia? Well, in April 2023, we got an update from Steve Martin himself. According to Variety, while on tour with co-star Martin Short, Martin was reportedly talking about his critically acclaimed mystery-comedy show, and he told the audience they could "catch the new season August 8." Steve Martin's update was confirmed just a few weeks later, when the suits at Disney officially went on the record with the show's release date. And when August 8 finally rolls around, we'll be getting two episodes instead of just one! That's a pretty crackerjack way to start off the season, which will wrap up on October 3.

What is the plot of Only Murders in the Building Season 3?

The end of "Only Murders in the Building" Season 2 leaves off with a diabolical cliffhanger. After solving the murder of Bunny Folger, it seems like everything is going to be okay for our podcasting protagonists. Oliver Putnam is putting on a play, Charles-Haden Savage is one of the leads, and Mabel Mora is excitedly watching from the audience. And then ... tragedy strikes.

So what happens next? Well, according to the official plot synopsis, "Season 3 finds Charles, Oliver, and Mabel investigating a murder behind the scenes of a Broadway show. Ben Glenroy is a Hollywood action star whose Broadway debut is cut short by his untimely death. Aided by co-star Loretta Durkin, our trio embarks on their toughest case yet, all while director Oliver desperately attempts to put his show back together."

Speaking with Variety, series co-creator John Hoffman promised the season would dive deeper both into the world of Broadway and the mind of Oliver Putnam. As Hoffman put it, "In Season 3, we're obviously making a leap into theater and around Oliver being a little bit more central in the emotional arc. It's his Broadway return, and that tethers out for all of them into a question of success — at what cost?" Hoffman then went on to add, "Are these three people cursed to forever have death around?"

Hoffman also said the show would explore the ramifications of some romantic entanglements. "There are lovely romantic possibilities happening that ask certain questions," he elaborated. "Are you able to commit, or should you be committed? The idea of commitment making you crazy."

Who is starring in Only Murders in the Building Season 3?

Never fear — Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are reprising their respective roles of Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora. But who will be joining them as they sleuth around the Great White Way?

Well, expect the return of "Only Murders" alumni such as Jane Lynch, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Ryan Broussard, Andrea Martin, Jason Veasey, and Michael Cyril Creighton. Even Tina Fey is coming back as Cinda Canning, albeit with blonde hair this time. The third season will also feature quite a few new faces, including some major A-listers. Beloved comedian and pint-sized superhero Paul Rudd will play actor Ben Glenroy, who we last saw collapsing on the stage of Oliver Putnam's play. He'll be joined by the legendary Meryl Streep as Loretta Durkin, a member of Oliver's play who's actually an awful actor. We can also expect the one and only Matthew Broderick, which has to be a meta joke as the "Ferris Bueller" star famously played the part of Leo Bloom in the Broadway play "The Producers" — which co-starred Nathan Lane, who portrayed criminal Teddy Dimas in the previous two seasons of "Only Murders."

Additionally, we'll see "Grey's Anatomy" star Jesse Williams as a documentarian who's investigating the very case our heroes will be trying to solve — and who seems to have some serious romantic vibes going on with Mabel Mora. Ashley Park ("Emily in Paris") will play TikTok-obsessed Broadway star Kimber, and we'll also see the likes of Adrian Martinez ("Renfield"), and Jeremy Shamos ("Better Call Saul"). They'll appear alongside Broadway luminaries such as three-time Tony nominee Linda Emond, Wesley Taylor, Don Darryl Rivera, Gerald Caesar, and Allison Guinn.

Is there a trailer for Only Murders in the Building Season 3?

The official trailer for "Only Murders in the Building" Season 3 starts off with a gruesome death, as we watch actor Ben Glenroy collapse on stage. Of course, this is just everyday business for our three podcasting heroes. "Well, you know, who are we without a homicide?" Mabel asks.

But this time, there's not only a killer on the loose — Oliver Putnam's play is hanging in the balance. If they want to catch a murderer and help the show go on, Charles, Mabel, and Oliver will have to take a close look at everyone involved with the play, from Meryl Streep's "stinkerooni" actress to Ashley Park's social media-obsessed starlet.

The trailer promises this will be the "wildest season yet," and based on some of the images flashing before our eyes, we totally believe it. Not only do we see Mabel and Charles performing some sort of musical number on stage, we also see the former wearing a wedding dress. Is marriage in the air for Mabel? Or is this all part of a play? And why is Mabel so bad at girl talk?

We've got so many questions and who killed Ben is just the first. Fortunately, we won't have to wait much longer for the return of "Only Murders in the Building," as the first two episodes drop on August 8.

Where can you watch previous seasons of Only Murders in the Building?

For anyone out there who wants to catch up with the first two seasons of "Only Murders in the Building" (and get a feel for the show's charming and hilarious spin on the classic murder-mystery genre), the first two seasons are available exclusively through Hulu

Subscriptions for Hulu (with ads) begin at $7.99/month or $79.99/year, while plans for Hulu (no ads) start at $14.99/month. On top of those regular subscription plans, several bundles are available that package Hulu alongside other prominent streamers and even broadcast television, such as the Hulu + Live TV plan, which starts at $69.99/month and also grants Disney+ and ESPN+.

The fact that "Only Murders in the Building" is only available through Hulu ought to come as no surprise to fans of the series, as the series is one of the most successful and important Hulu Originals that the company has ever produced. Indeed, Craig Erwich (the president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment) told Variety that the series was "the true crown jewel of our slate" and praised the way that the series was able to draw in audiences of all ages. Hulu's emphasis on the importance of "Only Murders in the Building" makes it extremely unlikely that the series will find a home on any other streaming service in the future — and as such, the only way to catch up on all previous episodes is through a Hulu subscription.
