Coco Beats Justice League At Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office

Coco has officially conquered Justice League at the box office. The newest Pixar flick took over the superhero team-up for the number one spot at the lucrative Thanksgiving weekend box office, pulling in $71.1 million over the five-day frame.

Coco follows 12-year-old Miguel (newcomer Anthony Gonzalez), a young boy from a shoemaker's family who dreams of becoming a musician like his idol, the late Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), despite his family having banned music for generations. When Miguel tries to follow in his idol's footsteps, he ends up transporting himself to the Land of the Dead, where he goes on an adventure to find out his real family history.

Although the movie comes at a time of upheaval for Pixar, it has received very positive reviews from critics, sitting at a 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, which has an all-Latino voice cast, also has a release date that's traditionally been very friendly to kids' movies. Its $71.1 million haul puts it in the top five Thanksgiving weekend grossers of all time, after Frozen with $93.6 million, Moana with $82.1 million, and Toy Story 2 with $80.1 million. It narrowly beat out Tangled's $68.7 million. (via Box Office Mojo)

Justice League, meanwhile, still isn't in a strong box office spot, although its 56.6 percent drop is low when compared to the rest of the DCEU's other films– Man of Steel fell 64.6 percent in its second week, while Suicide Squad fell 67.4 percent and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice fell 69.1 percent. Only Wonder Woman was able to hold onto more of its audience than Justice League, falling just 43.3 percent. (via Box Office Mojo)

Still, though, with just a $94 million opening– the lowest in the DCEU to date– Justice League has a lot of work to do in order to be profitable. This is at least in part due to lukewarm reviews from critics, a problem that has plagued the DCEU since its inception. The film, which stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher, Ezra Miller, and Jason Momoa, currently sits at a 41 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Elsewhere, Julia Roberts' tear jerker Wonder continued to impress, falling just 19 percent for an additional $22.3 million. This puts the film at a $69.4 million haul against just a $20 million budget. At the speciality box office, the critically acclaimed drama Call Me By Your Name debuted in four theaters and brought in $404,874 for a $101,219 per theater average. According to Variety, this is the best limited release of 2017 and the highest since La La Land's opening last December.
