Kit Harington Hatches A Plot In Gunpowder Trailer

HBO has released the first trailer for their upcoming miniseries Gunpowder, and it looks intense. The show features Game of Thrones star Kit Harington as Robert Catesby, a Warwickshire gentlemen who, along with British activist Guy Fawkes (Tom Cullen) and a group of provincial English Catholics, crafts a plan to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I in the early 17th century.

The trailer opens in England in 1603, where a mustachioed Harrington hatches his plan after the deaths of his brother and sister. "They will be avenged," he says ominously. "I am Robert Catesby. My purpose is to kill the king of England." Catesby then goes off to recruit other conspirators for his plan, which he says is "going to lead the Catholics of England out of their oppression."

The king, obviously, does not take well to the talk of a revolution against him, and he sets out to crush any dissent, putting Catesby, Fawkes, and their partners in danger. However, Catesby will not give up in his plan to get revenge. "For the first time in my life, my purpose is clear and my heart is full," he says. "I will blow them all to hell."

Liv Tyler, Peter Mullan, Edward Holcroft, Shaun Dooley, Robert Emms, Derek Riddell, and Mark Gatiss also star in Gunpowder, which was written by Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) and directed by J. Blakeson (The 5th Wave). Gunpowder premieres on Dec. 18 at 10 p.m. on HBO and will air over three nights, concluding on Dec. 20.
