The hilarious scene that didn't make it in Thor: Ragnarok
Director Taika Waititi filled Thor: Ragnarok will witty one-liners and cheeky callbacks to both pop culture and Marvel movies past, but one of his funniest ideas didn't make it to the final cut of the film.
Speaking with MTV's Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Waititi revealed that he wanted to use John Hughes movies as reference points for Thor: Ragnarok, and even pitched Marvel Studios on the idea. The filmmaker then explained that he originally planned a Hughes-inspired scene that fans would have absolutely adored (and found incredibly funny).
"I wanted this little thing, and maybe if we ever do a Thor 4 we can have it, but I wanted to do some flashbacks where Thor [Chris Hemsworth] was a kid, a fat little kid. There was like an '80s version of Asgard where everyone had massive shoulder pads, and everyone had mullets," Waititi said with a laugh. "Our idea was Thor and Valkyrie [Tessa Thompson] meet and he's like, 'Hey I know you,' and she's like, 'Ha, I remember you,' and then it cuts back to this thing and he's just this pudgy little kid walking around with a mullet and being picked on by other kids."
And the hilarity wouldn't have stopped there. As Waititi stated, Tom Hiddleston's Loki would be "this little emo goth hanging out by himself," sort of in the vein of Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter film series.
That scene would have jelled well with the overall tone of Thor: Ragnarok, especially in its meta-humor and self-awareness of the Thor movie franchise, but it isn't difficult to understand why it was scrapped and left on the cutting room floor, as including it may have thrown off the balance by tipping too far into comedic territory. But, as Waititi mentioned, a scene like that may pop up in Thor 4. Given how well Thor: Ragnarok fared at the box office, it looks like the director will at least get the chance to try it out again.
Beyond the classic Thor characters delivering the laughs in Thor: Ragnarok, some of the film's most hysterical moments come from characters who mean a lot more to the Marvel Cinematic Universe than you realize. Keep on reading to learn how they'll impact the MCU for years to come.
