Tessa Thompson Says Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie Is Bisexual

Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie could be the MCU's first openly LGBT character. Actress Tessa Thompson recently revealed on her Twitter account that the warrior is bisexual, writing in a response to a fan, "She's bi. And yes, she cares very little abut what men think of her. What a joy to play!"

Valkyrie is bisexual in the comics, and although Thompson seems to imply that her sexuality carries over to the big screen as well, it doesn't seem like it will be made explicit in the upcoming film. However, Valkyrie is rumored to be making an appearance in one of the next two Avengers films, and Thompson has been pushing for an all-female MCU hero team-up, so there should be plenty of opportunities for Marvel to further explore her sexuality in the future.

Valkyrie has an important part to play in Thor: Ragnarok. An elite warrior and a hard drinker, Valkyrie runs into Thor (Chris Hemsworth) after the goddess of death Hela (Cate Blanchett) has banished him to the desolate planet of Sakaar. There, Valkyrie captures him and, through a "business relationship" with the nefarious Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), she ends up getting the hero thrown into a gladiatorial contest, where his hair is shorn off and he is forced to fight his former "friend from work" the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

It seems that eventually, though, Thor will get past Valkyrie's rough introduction, as he will team up with her, Bruce Banner, and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to go on a quest to find his missing father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and take back control of Asgard from Hela. Along the way, the group will also run into Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange, who has an ominous warning for the titular hero.

Thor: Ragnarok, which has already received the love of critics with a 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, is based off a script from Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Chris Yost. The movie, which also stars Karl Urban and Rachel House, will hit theaters on Nov. 3.
