Disaster Is Approaching In Geostorm Trailer

Gerard Butler is the world's only hope in the new trailer for Geostorm. The action flick will star Butler as Jacob Lawson, a climate scientist responsible for integrating a system of climate-controlling satellites that help prevent extreme weather disasters. When the satellites are taken over, Jake must find a way to take them back before extreme weather destroys the world.

The trailer begins by introducing Butler's Jake, who has just flown back to Earth from space to speak with the government about his system. "Thanks to a system of satellites, natural disasters have become a thing of the past," the president (Andy Garcia) says, as the trailer shows off the system in action. "We can control our weather."

However, not all is well with the system, as it malfunctions, turning much of Afghanistan into a deadly, icy tundra. This leads the government to suggest shutting down the satellites completely, much to the chagrin of Jake and his younger brother Max (Jim Sturgess), who remind the government of all of the catastrophic climate conditions that the satellite has saved the world from.

Jake ends up going back into space to see what went wrong, but he quickly finds that his access has been blocked and the satellite has been taken over, unleashing huge snowballs, lightning strikes, and tornadoes across the globe. Back on earth, Max enlists the help of a secret service agent (Abbie Cornish) to kidnap the president and get the kill codes for the satellite. "Jake, if you can't stop it, no one can," Max tells his brother, who is on a mission of his own in outer space.

Katheryn Winnick, Daniel Wu, Ed Harris, Alexandra Lara, Eugenio Derbez, Amr Waked, Adepero Oduye, Billy Slaughter, Talitha Bateman, Robert Sheehan, and Tom Choi also star in the film, which was directed by Leverage and Independence Day producer Dean Devlin based on a script he co-wrote with Leverage and The Librarians writer Paul Guyot. The world will be taken by storm when the film is released on Oct. 20; while we wait, see some of the movies you have to look forward to in the coming months
