Johnny Depp Talks His Surprise Disneyland Appearance

Recently, Johnny Depp went to the happiest place on Earth to make a few Pirates of the Caribbean fans the happiest people on Earth. But what really happened during his visit at Disneyland?

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Depp dished on his experience surprising people at the theme park. Depp donned his Captain Jack Sparrow threads and hid inside Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, jumping out at everyone as they drifted by in their boats. While Depp believed the riders would be shocked at his unexpected presence, he got lukewarm-at-best reactions that didn't exactly live up to his expectations.

"Here's the thing. When we did the first Pirates, they showed me around the ride, and I thought [that] it would be so great to just sort of stand there like an animatronic and then when they [the guests] come past, you just go, 'What are you looking at?'" Depp laughed. "So... now they asked me to do it. I did it. I thought it was gonna be [big]."

Alas, it wasn't. Depp said that when he saw the boats coming around the corner, he would pop out and begin talking just like Jack Sparrow, interacting directly with the guests. "Even speaking to them specifically... nothing," Depp said. Rather than looking at him wide-eyed with disbelief, fans were reportedly glued to their phones, filming the inside of the attraction instead.

But Depp wasn't too dismayed. He even offered his own theory as to why the surprise didn't quite shake out: "I think they'd already seen Captain Jack a few times on the ride." Because the attraction features several animatronic versions of Depp as Sparrow, he believes fans might have thought the real deal was just another phony.

Depp's interview with Kimmel wasn't all dashed dreams, though. Before the stars dug into Depp's Disneyland surprise, they ushered in a new look at Depp's upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The clip features Captain Jack Sparrow and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) coming face-to-face with the spooky Captain Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his ghostly pirate crew. Take a look in the video above.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will sail into theaters on May 26. Until then, check out the actors who were almost cast in the film franchise.
