Fox Releases First Trailer For X-Men Pilot The Gifted
A new layer to the story has been revealed in the first full trailer for Fox's Marvel mutant pilot The Gifted. The series follows a family forced to go on the run from a hostile government after the children discover they have mutant powers– and, as it turns out, their father is one of the people charged with hunting people like them down.
The new trailer begins with an ominous scene showing Emma Dumont's Lorna Dane (aka Polaris) trapped in a government facility, with a creepy agent telling her, "I read your file. You're a very troubled young woman. Believe it or not I am here to help you." Polaris will come back into play as an important part of the story later in the trailer, but for now, this is where we leave her, as we flip back to the family at the center of it all.
"You know when you put your hand out of the window of a moving car?" Natalie Alyn Lind's Lauren says to her brother, Andy (Percy Hynes White). "You can feel the air and guide it? I can push the air together. Water too, other stuff." Lauren then says she's going to show her brother how to harness his powers, demonstrating hers by knocking a bag of popcorn out of the vending machine without paying.
Andy, as it turns out, has good use for the powers, as he is being bullied at school. At what appears to be a dance, a group of boys pull him into the locker room and throw him into the shower, where he begins to scream– and his powers begin to come into play. From what the trailer shows, it looks like Andy has the ability to bend and break metal, as well as manipulate sound. His sister, meanwhile, also shows off her powers during the chaos at the dance, something which doesn't spell good things for either of them.
After the dance, Coby Bell's character, one of the government spooks, shows up and insists that the children come with them. Their mother Kate, played by Amy Acker, tells him that there's no way her children are going anywhere, but it's the actions of their father Reed (Stephen Moyer) that are the most telling. Reed was initially advertised as being an attorney, but as it turns out, he actually has a connection to Bell's organization– and he was the creepy agent seen talking to Polaris at the beginning of the trailer. "Why didn't you tell me you had powers?" Kate asks her children. "Dad puts people like us in jail," Lauren responds.
However, as Bell's character notes, "things change when it's your own kid," and it looks like Reed is solidly on his family's side in this situation. Reed uses his connections from his job to find Marcos Diaz (Sean Teale), aka Eclipse, who appears to have some kind of light bending power– and who definitely has a relationship with Lorna. Reed agrees to tell Marcos everything he knows about Lorna's whereabouts, provided that Diaz helps to keep his family safe. "The X-Men, the brotherhood, we don't even know if they exist anymore," Diaz says.
It appears that the brotherhood is still in tact, though. While the trailer doesn't offer much in the way of information about the underground mutant network that the family joins to survive, if you watch closely, you can get a glimpse of Jamie Chung's Blink and Blair Redford's Sam. The action-packed trailer also gives a tease at some of the tech the government is using to hunt down the mutants.
X-Men's Bryan Singer directed the pilot for the show, which comes from Burn Notice's Matt Nix. The show is expected to premiere this fall. Now that we have a better glimpse at the show's characters, see whether or not they look more like their comic book counterparts than some of the X-Men in the movie universe.
