Zendaya Teases Her Spider-Man: Homecoming Character

Zendaya's Spider-Man: Homecoming is 100 percent, for sure, definitely named Michelle. Despite rumors that she's actually playing the famed Mary Jane, Zendaya confirmed on the MTV Movie and TV Awards red carpet that her character is actually just Michelle.

Marvel caused a stir last year when they cast Zendaya, one of the actors set to blow everyone away in 2017, in Homecoming, with many people getting upset when rumors started to swirl that she would be playing Mary Jane. However, the star has repeatedly denied this, just as she did at last night's awards. Still, with reports saying that Michelle's real identity is meant to be a twist revealed at the end of the movie when she asks Peter to call her MJ, anything is possible regarding the secretive film.

Even if she isn't secretly Mary Jane, a lot is still to be learned about Michelle, who we know is one of Peter's classmates (with what appears to be a pretty strong fondness for sarcasm). Michelle, seen briefly in the film's trailers, was teased a bit more in a clip released during the ceremony, showing her ribbing Peter (Tom Holland) over his secret. However, not much is known about the character or the role she'll have to play in Peter's story.

While she wouldn't offer many details on the role other than once again confirming her name (which we're still not fully buying), Zendaya did say that she was excited for the chance to play a "different" character. "I think, you know, this is a character that I can have fun with and just really create what I wanted to make her," she said. "Director [Jon Watts] had a lot of really cool ideas about how to make her weird and interesting and cool, and she is, says weird things at the wrong time but I think that's why people will like her. So it was nice, she's like my spirit animal, you know, how I feel on the inside."

We'll know for sure who Zendaya is playing when the movie is released on July 7. Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Michael Chernus, Bokeem Woodbine, Donald Glover, Tony Revolori, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tyne Daly, Jon Favreau, Logan Marshall Green, Angourie Rice, and Hannibal Burress also star.
