Matthew Vaughn Breaks Down The Kingsman: The Golden Circle Trailer

After two epic blink and you'll miss it teasers, the first full trailer for Kingsman: The Golden Circle has been released. However, even thought the trailer didn't move by at light speed like the past two teasers, it still left audiences with quite a lot of questions about what, exactly, we're seeing.

Luckily, writer and director Matthew Vaughn sat down with Empire to break down the trailer, giving more information about the film's new characters, returning foes, and what to expect from Colin Firth's Harry Hart.

Early on in the trailer, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) is seen driving a London taxi cab underwater, something which Vaughn said was a nod to the submarine Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me. However, he decided to go with something a little more accessible for the underwater moment and said, "Wouldn't it be cool having a car that everyone's been in doing it?" It isn't the taxi's only trick, either. Vaughn said he wanted to make a taxi "do s*** I've never seen."

The trailer also gives a better look at Michael Gambon, who plays the new head of the Kingsmen following the death of Micahel Caine's Arthur in the first movie. Vaughn said that Gambon was only on the set for one day, which means that his character was probably obliterated by the missile that strikes and destroys the Kingsman headquarters. "It felt like the right thing to do," Vaughn said of his decision to literally blow it all up. "We're not Bond, we do what feels right. We're allowed to push the rules and reinvent things."

Vaughn said that there is significance in the outfit Eggsy is shown wearing as he stares at the smoldering remains of his new home, with the character's orange suit hinting that he still has some of his unrefined street cred from the first movie. "I can't imagine Colin Firth having an orange smoking jacket," Vaughn said. "It actually looks really cool. Dapper. Eggsy has his favorite orange Adidas tracksuit and says, 'If it looks good in a tracksuit, why can't I have it in a dinner jacket?'"

The destruction of the Kingsman headquarters pushes Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) to team up with the Statesmen, who they find when they stumble on a whiskey manufacturer in Kentucky. One of the group's notable members is Agent Tequila (Channing Tatum), who Vaughn said previously worked as a rodeo clown. "He's a good ol' Southern boy who's like a pig in s*** about being a spy, and having access to as much whiskey as one can drink," Vaughn said. "He breaks all the rules and is a lot of fun."

Also in the mix is Agent Whiskey (Pedro Pascal), who Vaughn said fights with "classic Americana weapons" like the whip shown in the trailer. Vaughn said that Agent Whiskey fills in for Harry (Colin Firth) as a mentor to Eggsy, trying to teach him a few things, "but in a very different manner."

Vaughn also teased a few of the action scenes shown in the trailer, including the scene showing Eggsy set free in a very dangerous gondola ride. "These things spin around for real, but very slowly, so you get a view going up," Vaughn said. "So I wondered what would happen if you spin around fast."

He also explained the one-armed foe who Eggsy is seen fighting, saying that he is actually a clean-shaven, robotic-armed version of Eggsy's nemesis Charlie from the first film. "His implant exploded sideways in the first film, and he lost an arm as a result," Vaughn said, adding that Charlie is now working for the villainous Poppy (Julianne Moore). "But he has an amazing new arm for doing horrible things to people."

As far as the big reveal of Firth's return at the end of the trailer, Vaughn kept mostly mum on the how the supposedly dead former Kingsman came back to life. However, he did tease that he is definitely not the Harry Hart audiences came to know and love in the first movie. "He's Harry Hart, but he ain't Galahad," Vaughn said. "The only person who believes in him now is Eggsy. Nobody else does. It's quite sweet."

Halle Berry, Elton John, Sophie Cookson, Jeff Bridges, and Vinnie Jones also co-star in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which is due out on Sept. 22. While we wait, find out which other movies that are also going to blow you away this year.
