Movies that will blow everyone away in 2019

David Harbour will unveil his new take on Hellboy in 2019, with the Stranger Things star joining director Neil Marshall for what's described as a gritty take on the classic Mike Mignola comics. Harbour has said the movie will use a "darker tone" to differentiate itself from Guillermo del Toro's aptations, adding that it'll be more of "a character piece" about Hellboy's "struggle."

While Harbour's take on Hellboy looks spot on, the rest of the cast is also packed with potential, including Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Hellboy's adopted father, and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan. The movie also has signed Lost's Daniel Dae Kim to play comics favorite Major Ben Daimio (although it took them a while to get there).

Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron are teaming up for a big screen comedy in 2019. The funny duo is set to star in and produce Flarsky, which will be directed by Warm Bodies' Jonathan Levine from a Black List script from The Interview's Dan Sterling. The movie stars Rogen as an out of work journalist named Fred Flarsky who, constantly dealing with his own bad luck and self-destructive ways, decides he's going to finally go after his former childhood babysitter (and crush), played by Theron. The only problem? She's since become one of the most powerful and unattainable women in the world. Something tells us his pursuits are not going to go well—and we can't wait to see it.

The Lego Movie was the surprise hit of 2014, making $469 million worldwide and spawning a host of planned spinoffs. However, the actual sequel to the original film has run into quite a few production delays, pushing its planned 2018 release back to 2019. Even though everything hasn't exactly been awesome behind the scenes, there are still a lot of reasons to believe that the not-so-creatively-titled Lego Movie Sequel will blow you away.

The script was originally written by the first film's directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg later taking a stab at a rewrite before Lord and Miller came back to put their take on it again. The movie plans to investigate gender differences between how boys and girls play, building (ahem) on the Duplo pieces introduced by Finn's sister at the end of the first film—a good connection to the first movie that should still feel distinct. With Trolls' Mike Mitchell on board to direct, The Lego Movie Sequel should be well worth the wait.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 is another animated sequel that has faced a number of hurdles on its way to production, but the movie still has a lot going for it. For one thing, the film has a pretty intense logline: "As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless' discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup's reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind." The movie will also see the return of the franchise's Oscar-nominated writer and director Dean DeBlois, who says it will be the "culmination of Hiccup's coming of age," meaning the film should pull together lots of plot points from the original and the sequel without having to hold anything back. With much of the original and sequel's voice cast also returning and with an intense, no-holds-barred plot, How to Train Your Dragon 3 should definitely be a fun trip to the theater.

Marvel's first female-led superhero film will be long, long overdue when it finally hits theaters in 2019, but the movie is shaping up to be worth the wait. For one thing, Captain Marvel has Oscar winner Brie Larson as its Carol, an actress who has shown she has the ability to pull off action, comedy, and drama. The character also seems like she'll be getting a pretty impressive on-screen version. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said Captain Marvel will be "as powerful a character as we've ever put in a movie." There's also some impressive talent behind the scenes, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the mind behind the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot and DC's Gotham City Sirens, rewriting a script from Guardians of the Galaxy's Nicole Perlman and Inside Out's Meg LeFauve.

While we don't know what'll happen in Captain Marvel's first solo big-screen adventure, the studio has directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck at the helm. The talent it's assembled thus far is impressive and hints that the film, which will serve as an origin story for Carol (and will be different than her origin story from the comics), will definitely be a must-see. While we wait to find out more, we've done a little Photoshop to show you what Larson might look like when she wields Captain Marvel's power.

Disney has given a number of animated classics the live-action treatment, but one of the most intriguing is Tim Burton's Dumbo, starring Colin Farrell as Holt, a former circus performer whose life is turned upside down after he returns home from the war. Holt teams up with circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) to care for the titular newborn elephant, whose giant ears have already made him a laughingstock.

However, Dumbo's and Holt's fates quickly change when the elephant reveals he can fly, leading businessman V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) and his partner Colette Marchant (Eva Green) to swoop in to try and make him a star. The movie's all-star cast also includes Alan Arkin as a Wall Street tycoon. With Burton and a whole host of amazing actors on board, this should be a worthy retelling of the classic tale.

Eddie Murphy may be the man most synonymous with Doctor Dolittle, but Robert Downey Jr. will put his stamp on the legendary character in 2019. Downey, who will likely be done with his MCU days after the fourth Avengers film, is set to play the lead in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, which will be based on the same 1920s Hugh Lofting children's books as the famous Murphy films.

The movie comes from a script by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana), who's also set to direct. Plot details are unknown, but we can only hope Downey gets the chance to use his glorious pipes should the movie end up being a musical like the 1967 original.

The fourth Avengers film will mark the end of Marvel's Phase 3, which means it's probably time to break out your tissues. With the new set of films coming to an end and with many of the big-name contracts expiring as well, Avengers 4 will probably result in quite a few character deaths, with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and more all likely to bite the dust. With the no-holds-barred approach the studio will likely have to the film, Avengers 4 is sure to be epic, ending dozens of storylines set up in past films while also placing the framework for what's to come in the franchise's future. While we'll learn a lot more about what to expect in Avengers 4 when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters in 2018, the movie is sure to be a can't-miss adventure.

The Bogeyman is coming back to the big screen in 2019, with Keanu Reeves set to return as the titular dog-loving former hitman for John Wick: Chapter Three. Reeves surprised everyone with the amazing first film, and proved he could pull it off again with a well-received Chapter Two; with Chapter Three, the franchise gets a chance to test its growing success during blockbuster season with its first-ever summer release date. The competition will be tougher at the box office this time around, but we're sure this Wick has more than enough firepower to hold its own.

Guy Ritchie will reveal his "ambitious and non-traditional' take on Aladdin in 2019, with Mena Massoud taking on the title role alongside Power Rangers star Naomi Scott as his Jasmine. Massoud and Scott landed the two main roles after a worldwide casting call involving thousands of hopefuls, so you have to imagine that they're perfect fits.

The rest of the cast includes Will Smith stepping into Robin Williams' role as the Genie and Marwan Kenzari playing the villainous Jafar. Saturday Night Live's Nasim Pedrad is set to play a comic relief role as Jasmine's handmaiden and friend, while Into the Woods' Billy Magnussen joins as a princely rival for Jasmine's love. Magnussen's casting has come with plenty of controversy, with many upset that the classic story will be changed to add a white actor, but we still have trust in the Disney machine to make this a magical trip to the theater.

After years in development hell, Channing Tatum's Gambit looks like it'll finally hit the big screen in 2019. The film is set to feature the 21 Jump Street actor as the smooth-talking, card-playing mutant, reportedly as he stands trial in New Orleans for a "seemingly impossible heist" involving a group of mutants. (Official plot details have not been confirmed yet.) Tatum is set to produce the movie as well as star, with Josh Zetumer (RoboCop) writing the script. Considering Tatum has said the film will call on the lessons learned from risky superhero flicks like Logan and Deadpool, this movie seems like it could be a great addition to the X-Men franchise. 

If you somehow didn't empty your tear ducts forever during Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4 is on the way. While plot details for the movie have been kept under wraps and the release date has been delayed already, Pixar has yet to put out a bad story about toys. All the details we've heard thus far about Toy Story 4 indicate it will be a solid inclusion in the franchise.

According to Pixar chief creative officer and Toy Story director John Lasseter, the treatment for the film, which wasn't initially planned but ended up being ordered due to the storyline, was "unbelievable," focusing on the love story between Woody and Bo Peep and showing Woody and Buzz teaming up to find a missing Bo. The Pixar machine hasn't failed us yet, and we're excited to see their animated rom-com on screen.

Transformers: The Last Knight is set to reveal the untold history of the Transformers on earth, something that's sure to rewrite the franchise and set up a whole new world for the future. There's still another Transformers movie to follow that as well, so by the time we hit 2019, the Transformers franchise should be ready to go absolutely bonkers. With 14 potential Transformers movies planned, there's clearly lots of territory left for the franchise to explore, and with each movie going bigger than the last one, it seems as though Transformers 7 will be exactly the kind of world-destroying, techno-happy movie that audiences are always clamoring to go out to the theaters for.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man is set to continue his adventures in a second standalone film in 2019, which will follow another year of Peter's high school experience, similar to Harry Potter. The first movie was wildly successful with both critics and fans, and the second is bringing back a lot of the elements that contributed to its greatness. This includes director Jon Watts, who is in talks to return, and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have also worked with Marvel on Ant-Man and the Wasp. We're definitely ready to join Holland and co. on another adventure.

Disney's remake machine is already going strong, and Jon Favreau's The Lion King remake is expected to be a huge piece of the studio's increasing push toward live action. The movie will bring back James Earl Jones to reprise his role as Mufasa from the original, with Donald Glover providing the voice (and, hopefully, the vocals) for Simba and Beyonce doing the same for Nala. While no one has officially signed on to play Nala yet (rumor has it Beyonce is the top choice), the impressive leads already have some equally impressive backup in the form of Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner, who will voice Timon and Pumba.

While it may be difficult to imagine how the animal planet of The Lion King will translate to live action, Favreau already has quite a lot of experience in this arena, directing Disney's The Jungle Book remake in 2016. The studio knows what they're doing when it comes to pulling on people's heartstrings and bringing up alllll the childhood nostalgia, and with a good cast in front of the camera and an impressive crew behind the scenes, The Lion King is sure to roar its way into your heart.

Now that the X-Men movies have exhausted pretty much every timeline they can leap into and out of with Logan's dismal glimpse of the future, it's time for the New Mutants to start running the school. Directed by Josh Boone, New Mutants will introduce a group of mutant teens who are forced to reconcile their powers and their past sins after they are captured and held in a mysterious secret facility.

The biggest stars of the comic series had some mutant skills that should be pretty fun to see unfold onscreen, including Sunspot (a character who made a brief cameo in X-Men: Days of Future Past played by Adan Canto), who turns into a ball of dangerous UV radiation, Mirage the spooky soothsayer, and even the shape-shifting, pseudo-sentient robot Warlock. Fox has also brought some big stars on board to play their superpowered teens, including Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams, Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton, and Split's Anya Taylor-Joy. Alice Braga, Henry Zaga, and Blu Hunt also star.

New Mutants is set to bring a horror feel to the X-Men universe, but what has some viewers really scared is a behind-the-scenes shakeup. The movie was initially set to be released in April of 2018, but was then pushed back to February of 2019, reportedly so it would avoid competition with Deadpool 2 in overseas markets — then again to August 2, 2019. However, other rumors suggest that the film was actually pushed so the studio could make it scarier. Although New Mutants' release date push may have you spooked, it could be a good sign that the studio wants to take the time to get things just right.

Quentin Tarantino's next movie is set to arrive in theaters in 2019. The movie will follow the Charles Manson murders, although Tarantino has said that it won't be a biopic—rather, it'll focus on the state of the world in 1969. The movie will include some of the biggest aspects of the Manson murders, though, with Tarantino said to be talking to Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie for the role of Sharon Tate.

The story will focus on a male TV actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) who's had one hit series but is now looking to step away from the business. His sidekick (Brad Pitt), who is also his stunt double, is feeling the same way. Their story is eventually somehow affected by the murders of Tate and four of her friends by Manson and his followers, with the killings said to be a "backdrop" to the main story.

Two comedy superstars are set to join together for a DC drama in 2019. Bridesmaids Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy and Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish are teaming up for DC and New Line's The Kitchen, based on the 2014 Vertigo comic book series written by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. The movie has a script from Straight Outta Compton's Andrea Berloff, who is also set to make her directorial debut with the film.

The Kitchen isn't exactly the movie you would expect McCarthy and Haddish to star in, but it certainly has an intriguing plot that should give the duo a chance to stretch their dramatic muscles. The movie is described as a "gritty" film set in Hell's Kitchen in the 1970s. After an FBI sweep captures the leaders of the Irish mob, their wives take over, running the business in a more brutal way than their husbands ever did. With female stars, a female director, and an appealing anti-hero story, this one seems like a winner.

Jason Momoa will try his hand at remaking a cult hit in 2019. The Aquaman actor is set to star in a reboot of the 1994 supernatural thriller The Crow, taking over the role initially played by Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an accidental shooting on set shortly before principal photography was to be completed.

The Crow reboot, reportedly titled The Crow Reborn, is said to stick more closely to the 1989 James O'Barr graphic novel on which the original film was based. We've used a little Photoshop magic to give you a sneak peek of what Momoa might look like as main character Eric Draven, a musician who is shot and killed after he and his fiancee are attacked by a group of thugs. Eric is later resurrected by a crow, and he uses his newfound life to seek vengeance for his fiancee's death. The dark film will be directed by Corin Hardy, who has experience with spooky subjects thanks to his past work on The Nun and The Hallow.

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the character's 25th feature film in 2019. While the star's involvement was left up in the air for a long time, he's confirmed to come back for what's reportedly one last outing, with Trainspotting's Danny Boyle saying that the script is currently in progress and he's on board to direct.  A lot about the movie is still being hammered out right now (including a distributor, in a hotly contested race), but none of it threatens to revoke 007's long-standing license to kill at the box office.

The Terminator will be back on the big screen in 2019. Deadpool's Tim Miller is set to direct the latest installment of the franchise, while the original's James Cameron will produce. Some people may still be a little wary of the Terminator franchise since Genisys, but the new film looks like it's headed in the right direction, with Cameron saying it will ignore the events of the three films that followed T2 and treat them like they were in an alternate reality. 

The newest film will also bring back original stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, and it won't try to de-age its elder heroes—instead, it will fully embrace how seasoned the pair has become. In addition, the movie, set to be the first in a trilogy, will introduce a new young woman to help the franchise tell new stories in the future. That's more than enough to convince us to give The Terminator another chance.

There's been good news and bad news recently about the long-gestating Masters of the Universe adaptation. While the movie finally got a release date, hinting it could actually be headed towards production soon, it lost its director, with McG dropping out for an unknown reason. However, the film is still shaping up to be a powerful adaptation of the cosmic He-Man, with an experienced superhero screenwriter at the helm in David S. Goyer, the man behind Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Blade, Man of Steel, and more. There are also a bevy of A-list actors reportedly vying to play roles in the film, and, with more and more stars scrambling to sign on to superhero movies in recent years, it looks like Masters of the Universe should have no problem assembling an impressive cast of characters.

Shrek 5 won't hit theaters until nearly nine years after Shrek Forever After, but Dreamworks is assuring viewers that the next movie in the hugely popular franchise will still blow everyone away. The fifth film is apparently set to launch a reinvented Shrek franchise, with a whole potential Shrek universe on the way as well. "Reinvention was sort of called for," said screenwriter Michael McCullers. "There's been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they're great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point." While it's unclear exactly what the reinvention will entail, there are quite a few storylines in the Shrek universe that have yet to be explored, and it will be interesting to see which fairy tale myths the franchise decides to mine next.
