New Assassin's Creed Trailer Explores Time-Jumping Backstory

If you've already seen the previous trailers for the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie adaptation, you might be under the impression that most of it is set in the days of the Spanish Inquisition. But the latest trailer seems to confirm IGN's report that the majority of the movie is actually set in the film's present-day.

The trailer delves deep into the backstory of Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) and his significance as the last living descendant of a secret order of assassins. But much of the focus centers around the mysterious organization that has recruited him against his will, and the seemingly dubious agenda of Jeremy Irons' character. Brendan Glesson even shows up to warn that things may not be what they seem.

We also get a good look at the artifact Lynch is sent to retrieve: the Apple of Eden, which gives its owner the ability to rule the world without question. So you can see what all the fuss is about.

Assassin's Creed will arrive in theaters Dec. 21, just a few days after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In the meantime, check out some video game movies that never got made.
