Logan photo hints at bleak future for mutants

Aside from the announcement that Wolverine 3 is actually called Logan and the reveal of the cryptic poster (above), most of the teasers for the upcoming Marvel flick have been more like modern art.

Director James Mangold and the movie's official Instagram have been releasing new images nearly every day, but the photos typically bring more questions than answers. And the latest does that very literally.

The stark, black-and-white photo features a public bathroom stall with the phrase "Where are all the mutants?" carved into it. That's kind of a Watchmen vibe, but it's definitely in line with what we know about Logan so far.

The movie is rumored to be set in 2024, and that allows plenty of time for the mutant struggle to become increasingly real. The plot is believed to be inspired by the comic book storyline Old Man Logan, in which an older Wolverine struggles with his fading abilities.

Mangold previously posted a page from the script (via CBM), and it confirmed that the movie finds both Wolverine and Professor X (Patrick Stewart) in a bad way. "As for our hero, he's older now and it's clear his abilities aren't what they once were," it reads. "He's fading on the inside and his diminished healing factor keeps him in a constant state of chronic pain–hence booze as a painkiller."

But Mangold also posted a storyboard that shows Wolverine is still up to his old tricks–like smashing his adamantium claws through the windshield of a moving car. According to TheWrap, the plot will center around a government-type program called Transigen that converts mutant kids into killing machines. That's probably the hand of one those kids in the poster, and all indications are that she's actually the Wolverine clone X-23.

Richard E. Grant will reportedly play Dr. Zander Rice, the man in charge of Transigen, and Boyd Holbrook's Donald Pierce will serve as his head of security.

Logan is set for release March 3, 2017. While we wait for more vague clues, check out the dark side of X-Men you never knew about.
