Avengers: Infinity War could be based on a different comic
There's a chance Avengers: Infinity War won't actually be based on the Marvel Comics series it's named after.
According to a report by LRM, the plot of the upcoming Avengers sequel is closer to the events of 1991's Infinity Gauntlet comics crossover. Take it with a grain of salt, though, because LRM cites "galactic Marvel spies" as the source, and we're not sure those actually exist.
Rumor has it the movie will begin with "the exact premise" of Infinity Gauntlet, in which Thanos (Josh Brolin) uses the staggering power of the titular weapon to impress the personification of death (presumably played by a female actress, and potentially Cate Blanchett's Hela from the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok).
In the Infinity Gauntlet comics, Thanos aims to extinguish half the life in the universe, which could definitely be enough motivation to cause the intergalactic alliance of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, which Vin Diesel (via Entertainment Weekly) confirmed will happen. And LRM claims that Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury will also join in the fight.
The storyline of the Infinity War series follows Adam Warlock in a battle with Magus, and LRM points out that those characters don't seem to be "part of the equation" for this film.
So is the movie title false advertising or just liberal use of the broader Marvel universe? We're inclined to believe the latter. Brolin recently told Moviefone that Infinity War serves as the culmination of all the MCU movies so far. "These Avengers stories all come down to this conclusion," he said. "Basically, [it's] my character against everybody. And it's really fun what they've chosen to do with the story."
Will it be the grand finale we're hoping for? "I think it's brilliant, personally," Brolin said. "I was blown away, and had goose pimples pretty much 50% of the time that I was listening to what was going on."
Avengers: Infinity War will be released May 4, 2018. Check out unexpected things we think could happen during Marvel's Phase 3, and directions the MCU could take after the events of Infinity War.
