Mission: Impossible - Fallout Trailer: No Peace Without Suffering

Some missions aren't a choice.

Paramount Pictures has dropped an all-new trailer for the Tom Cruise-starrer Mission: Impossible – Fallout, where there's another ostensibly absurd operation for Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt to carry out. But this time around, the consequences are much greater, the stakes far higher, the characters deadlier than ever before, and the requisite sacrifices real and unavoidable.

"There cannot be peace without, first, a great suffering," Sean Harris' Syndicate leader Solomon Lane tells Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt in the trailer. "And the greater the suffering, the greater the peace. The end you've always feared is coming. It's coming, and the blood will be on your hands."

From that intense declaration, the footage spotlights Cruise performing death-defying stunts as Ethan Hunt — leaping out of windows and narrowly avoiding motorcycle explosions and helicopter crashes — and gets us reacquainted with Simon Pegg's Benjamin "Benji" Dunn, the technical field agent who first appeared in Mission: Impossible III. The trailer also introduces two new-to-the-franchise faces: a mustachioed Henry Cavill as August Walker and an all-work-no-play Angela Bassett in an important but still undisclosed role.

Cavill's August Walker acts as the McGuffin in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, as he's an elite assassin who has "been authorized" to hunt Ethan down and kill him. Whether Ethan will actually escape August's clutches remains to be seen, though if the agent has made it this far, we've got a feeling he'll end up on top in Fallout, the sixth installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Written, directed, and co-produced by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout brings back Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Michelle Monaghan as Julia Meade-Hunt, and Alec Baldwin as Secretary Alan Hunley. Wes Bentley, Vanessa Kirby, Sian Brooke, and Frederick Schmidt round out the cast.

Here's what to expect from Mission: Impossible – Fallout: "The best intentions often come back to haunt you. Mission: Impossible – Fallout finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise – Top Gun, American Made, The Mummy) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin – Saturday Night Live, The Boss Baby, Beetlejuice; Simon Pegg – Star Trek, Ready Player One; Ving Rhames – Pulp Fiction, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson – The Greatest Showman, The Girl on the Train; Michelle Monaghan – The Bourne Supremacy, The Heartbreak Kid) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill (Justice League, Man of Steel), Angela Bassett (Black Panther, American Horror Story), and Vanessa Kirby (Me Before You, The Crown) also join the dynamic cast."

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is set to open wide on July 27.
