The First Purge Trailer Teases The Violent Tradition's Bloody Origins

You never forget your first Purge.

Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for The First Purge, giving viewers an intimate, visceral look into the origins of alternate America's most violent tradition.

Directed by Gerard Murphy (Burning Sands) and written by James DeMonaco (2013's The Purge), The First Purge rolls back the franchise's clock to start at the very beginning, when lawmakers ironically went against their job titles and implemented 12 hours of annual lawlessness across the United States. Fans will watch as the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test out a controversial sociological theory that allows for pent-up aggression and primal rage to be released for one night only, in one isolated community.

They call the experiment "The First Purge," and it goes quite well... at the start. When the oppressors' violence collides with the marginalized's anger, and the two groups take up arms against one another, the virus of violence bursts out of the trial-city and spreads across the entire nation.

The First Purge follows after the 2013 original film, which pulled a huge profit when it grossed $64.4 million against its $3 million budget, as well as the two series sequels, 2014's The Purge Anarchy and 2016's The Purge: Election Year.

Starring Marisa Tomei, Lex Scott Davis, Y'Lan Noel, Jovian Wade, and Lauren Velez, The First Purge will commence on July 4.
