Legion season 2 trailer teases a dance with the devil
It's time to head back to the psych ward.
After first circulating a round of cryptic teasers over the course of the last couple of weeks, FX has finally gone and unleashed a full trailer for the upcoming second season of its mindbending mutant drama Legion. It looks just as cryptic as the teasers do, but about 200 times more insane — in other words, precisely what you were probably hoping for.
The trailer confirms that the series will continue its daring formalist experiments by teasing a number of bizarre and awesome setpieces, allowing audiences glimpses of such sights as a forest at the top of a skyscraper, an exploding garden, a pit of dark quicksand, and a wicked nightclub-style dance sequence between the heroes and villains. It all makes sense if you've seen the first season… sort of. Plot-wise, the season appears to pick up right where the previous one left off, with David becoming trapped inside of a floating drone in a cliffhanger sequence.
The full trailer also provides a first look at the true form of the Shadow King, Amahl Farouk, played by Homeland's Navid Negahban. That villain, the nemesis of Dan Stevens' protagonist David Haller, previously manifested himself in the forms of a nefarious Aubrey Plaza and an upsettingly-creepy-looking pear-shaped man with yellow eyes, among other horrors.
In addition to shepherding Legion, series creator Noah Hawley is also working on a feature-length film centering on the Marvel villain Doctor Doom, an outsized, larger-than-life character who would seem to fit right in with the filmmaker's artistically daring sensibilities — so we can only hope that movie, now in development, actually advances to getting made. If not, these two seasons of Legion are looking like they'll be packed with more than enough head-scratching, pulse-pounding mutant action to make up for it.
Legion season two will premiere on FX on Tuesday, April 3.
